Paphiopedilum rothschildianum ‘Black Star’ x ‘Tarantula’ GM/JGP

Paphiopedilum rothschildianum ‘Black Star’ x ‘Tarantula’ GM/JGP

The king of Paphs from one of the best producers in the world! Not only do you not have to grow these up yourself, these plants are already in spike! It looks like most will only have 3 flowers this year. Most of the spikes are still pretty low but 3 seems to be the average. We saw that with the first bloomers from our breeding last year after a winter with absolutely no sun in California.

In spike seedlings in 5″ pots. Extremely limited…don’t hesitate as they will go fast.

Paphiopedilum rothschildianum ‘Black Star’ x ‘Tarantula’ GM/JGP is a cross made by Tokyo Orchid Nursery. ‘Tarantula’ is a very famous plant, and its flower were 39 cm across when awarded its gold medal. I am less familiar with ‘Black Star’, but Machan has used it to make several crosses so he must think highly of it. The results have been very dark, as you would expect.

Tokyo Orchids has been making some of the finest roths in the world for many years now. Real estate is particularly expensive in Japan, so space is at a premium. To that end, Machan tries to produce more compact growing plants that still have large flowers.
