Paphiopedilum callosum

This is an easy to grow species with attractive leaves and colorful flowers. This cross should produce vinicolor and type flowers. Vinis have come off plants with no pigment in the foliage so we can’t tell until they bloom.

Description

Paphiopedilum callosum is a well known mottled leaf species. It is native to Thailand, Vietnam and neighboring countries and was first described in 1892. It is one of the parents of the most famous mottled leaf hybrid, Paphiopedilum Maudiae (callosum x lawrenceanum). Jay’s site has more details about this species, including a photo of the ‘type’ coloration.

This species comes in various color forms including ‘type’ (which is red, pink, green and white), album and vinicolor. The vinicolor form is the reason we have dark vinicolor mottled leaf hybrids, as the gene originated in this species. Line breeding has improved size, color and form in this species. This group of seedlings has produced both type and vinicolor flowers.

This species is easy to grow. Like other mottled leaf Paphs it will tolerate low to moderate light and prefers intermediate to warm temperatures. You can find more specifics on our care page.
