Description

Paphiopedilum venustum var album is the bright green form of the species. The type form of Paphiopedilum venustum has various shades of red and brown. The album form is unable to produce anthocyanin, which gives flowers red color. Once the red pigment is removed it leaves a beautiful green flower with bold stripes and unusual lines on the pouch. This unique and beautiful flower is an important parent to many of today’s modern mottled leaf hybrids.

This species is quite easy to grow and flower. One important thing to note is that this plant is particularly attractive to mealybugs. If you have any mealies in your collection they will show up on this plant first. Some people actually keep this species on their greenhouse bench just for that reason. They just monitor this plant to see when they should spray pesticide.

Other than that, this species just needs warm temperatures and moderate light. Just treat it like any other mottled leaf Paphiopedilum. We have more specifics on our culture page.
